Assessment

Monitoring Progress

At Grange Academy, we celebrate and carefully track every pupil’s progress. Learning is assessed in every lesson through differentiated learning ladders, teacher assessment and pupil observations.

Within the ASC classes, staff use the Neuroinclusive Education Network (NEN) progression framework to assess pupils across eight areas of difference and identify priorities for support.

Teachers set personalised, aspirational targets using our Grange Target Tracker system and monitor progress throughout the year. Progress is reviewed half-termly to identify achievements, gaps in learning and any additional support required.

Pupil progress is discussed regularly in termly progress meetings. EHCP targets are monitored by Form Tutors and reviewed with Heads of Department or the SENDCo, while reading and spelling ages are assessed each term.

Grange Steps

At Grange Academy, we use Grange Steps and pupil-friendly ‘I can’ statements to measure and celebrate progress. These provide a clear learning pathway from Key Stage 1 through to accredited qualifications, reflecting each pupil’s individual strengths, needs and abilities.

Using baseline assessments and termly reviews, teachers track progress, set challenging targets and identify any barriers to learning. Pupils are assessed through both formative and summative methods, including academic achievement and social, emotional and behavioural development.

This personalised approach ensures that every pupil receives the support and interventions they need to achieve their full potential.

Qualifications

In all cases teachers will ensure that high expectations of all pupils are aligned with their individual abilities and EHCP needs. Realistic decisions are made as to whether pupils are able to access exams and particular qualifications.

These include:

  • GCSEs
  • Level 1 and 2 qualifications
  • Functional Skills
  • Entry Level Certifications
  • Entry Level Awards
  • NCFE qualifications

GCSE examinations are challenging for some of our pupils with them being linear courses, with little/no coursework but examinations at the end of a two-year course. Where pupils are able to we prepare them for formal examinations. Pupils are able to access exams with additional support such as prescribed readers, scribes, electronic reading pens and with additional time.

Performance Data

We use a wide range of internal and external data to evaluate how effectively we are performing, moderate our own assessment judgements and plan for ongoing, sustained improvement.

None of our pupils take 8 GCSEs or have taken any KS2 SATs exams. Our cohort sizes are also small ( 13 pupils in Year 11 in 2019-20) meaning that the performance of just one pupil can significantly alter any trends seen in data.  The fact that floor standards do not apply to special schools is clear recognition of the very limited relevance of these measures to our provision.

Whilst some of our pupils do achieve GCSE qualifications we also offer a wide range of other qualifications, such as Entry Level Certificates and Functional Skills.
